Utah Laser Technician School, Certification and Salary

Education Required

Starting July 1, 2013, the state of Utah has enacted a law which directly addresses the use of lasers in cosmetic and medical procedures. The law currently approaches the laser treatments by separating them into two groups: Non-Ablative Hair Removal and Non-Ablative Other than Hair Removal.

All persons other than licensed physicians and advanced practice registered nurses must complete the following requirements to perform ANY laser treatments in the state:

  • Received appropriate training regarding the medical procedure
  • An unrestricted license or needs to perform under the license of a supervising physician and surgeon
  • Maintained competence to perform non-ablative cosmetic medical procedures through documented education and experience of at least 80 hrs., as defined by rule, regarding:
    • Appropriate standard care for performing procedure
    • Physiology of skin
    • Skin conditions, disorders, and diseases
    • Pre- and post- procedure care
    • Infection control
    • Laser and light physics training
    • Laser technologies and applications
    • Safety and maintenance of lasers
    • Cosmetic medical procedures an individual is permitted to perform under this title
    • Recognition and appropriate management of complications from a procedure
    • CPR

 

In addition, all laser technicians within the state must also hold a physician assistant, registered nurse, master esthetician, electrologist or medical assistant license with the state board. Each licensure allows for a certain set of restrictions for laser treatments which can be found here.

In short, Laser Hair Removal may be delegated to anyone carrying the above licenses however supervision will differ as follows:

  • General Supervision – Available if needed (within 60 min or 60 miles)
    • Registered nurse
    • Master esthetician
    • Electrologist
  • Indirect Supervision – Provides instruction, present at facility, available immediately
    • Licensed practical nurse
    • Licensed esthetician
    • Medical assistant

 

Procedures other than laser hair removal may be delegating to anyone carrying the following licensures:

  • General Supervision – Available if needed (within 60 min or 60 miles)
    • Registered Nurse
    • Master Esthetician
  • Direct Supervision – is present and available for face-to-face communication when & where procedure is performed
    • Esthetician

Utah Laser Technician Certification(s)

To perform laser treatments there is no specific licensure required, however each of the roles above require their own license. Each license requires specific training, education as well as a state board approved examination before application.

Skincare Specialists (Ethetician and Electrologists) in the state of Utah can expect an average income of $28,560 per year, or $13.73/hour. This salary expectation is less than the national average of $30,270. Persons with more complex licenses including PA, Nursing and LPNs can make upwards of $100,000. Experience can also increase your salary over time.
