The requirements for any person providing laser treatment are set by the Pennsylvania Medical Board. These rules were upheld in a district court case out of Pennsylvania from 2009. A summary of this case can be found here.

Education Required

The medical board of Pennsylvania has ruled that the use of lasers in medical or cosmetic procedures is considered the practice of medicine and as such should only be performed by a licensed physician or a delegate of that physician with proper supervision.

Laser devices of all classes may only be sold to licensed physicians to ensure compliance with this law.

The rule does not specify what is considered adequate training for a delegate however I always suggest prospective laser technicians complete training at a nationally accredited laser program to ensure the safety of patients.

Since the physician will hold primary responsibility for the actions of the delegate, they may require their own training on the safe usage of lasers including preoperative and post-operative protocols.

Pennsylvania Laser Technician Certification(s)

The state of Pennsylvania does not have any licensure requirements for laser technicians who are delegated procedures by licensed physicians. Employers may require national certifications to ensure the proper usage of laser and safety of their patients.
