Education Required
The Medical Board of New York decided in 2002 that the use of lasers for any cosmetic and medical treatments, including laser hair removal, is the practice of medicine. As such, these procedures should only be performed by licensed physicians within the state or under their direction.
Currently, physicians may delegate procedures which they are trained and qualified to perform so long as they provide supervision.
No formal training requirements are specified by law for delegates however physicians hiring prospective laser technicians will want applicants to have education and experience from technician school.
There is a pending bill within the state senate (Senate Bill S6088) which looks to amend the current law in New York and allow estheticians to perform laser hair removal without the direction of a physician. The bill also looks to set age, training and hands-on experience requirements as well.

New York Laser Technician Certification(s)
Currently, the state of New York does not require any licensure or certifications for delegates of laser treatments. The supervising physician is responsible for ensure delegates have the proper training and experience to perform these procedures safely. Physicians may require certification through a nationally accredited organization.
