Education Required
The Montana State Board of Medical Examiners has found that the use of lasers in cosmetic and medical procedures is considered the practice of medicine and therefore must be performed by a licensed physician.
The Montana Board of Barbers and Cosmetologist also ruled the following:
“The use of laser energy, as prescribed in ARM 24.156.501 as “any procedure in which human tissue is cut or altered by mechanical or energy forms, including electrical or laser energy or ionizing radiation” constitutes the practice of medicine and is prohibited for all individuals licensed under this chapter.”
Laser treatments are prohibited from delegation to Medical Assistants as defined in statute, meaning the only person who can perform laser procedures in the state of Montana are licensed physicians.
Montana Laser Technician Certification(s)
As the law prohibits non-physicians from performing laser treatment, prospects must have a current license to practice medicine in the state of Montana to complete any procedures. This will require proper education, residency and licensure with the Medical Board.

The job market in Montana for skincare specialist is very limited considering a small need for the procedures and requirement for a physician to perform them.
