Education Required

The state of Arkansas defines the rules and regulations for persons using laser in medical and cosmetic treatment in Regulation No. 22 of the Arkansas Medical Practices Act & Regulations. In short, Arkansas law “finds that the use of medical lasers on human beings, for therapeutic or cosmetic purposes, constitutes the practice of medicine.”

Because the use of lasers is considered the practice of medicine in Arkansas, becoming a laser technician will require a higher level of education including completion of a physician assistant or surgeon assistant program accredited by the American Medical Association’s Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Medical Doctors in Arkansas may delegate medical and cosmetic treatment using lasers to a physician assistant so long as the medical doctor personally diagnoses the condition and prescribes the treatment, and is available to treat the patient if any complications arise.

Arkansas Laser Technician Certification(s)

Arkansas requires laser treatments be performed by a medical doctor or a physician assistant if delegated by a medical doctor. After completion of physician assistant school, a laser technician will be required to complete a  certifying examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. The examination is taken over a 5 hour period and includes 300 multiple choice questions. A passing score is typically 350 or greater. After completing the PANCE, applicants can apply for licensure with the Arkansas State Medical Board.
