Texas Laser Technician School, Certification and Salary

Education Required

The state of Texas differentiates the rules and regulations for laser treatments dependent on the complexity of the procedure being performed. Medical procedures including removal of skin are considered the practice of medicine and as such should only be performed by a licensed physician or a delegate. Cosmetic procedures including laser hair removal may be completed without physician licensure if you meet certain requirements.

The Department of Health sets the standard for laser hair removal through statute 25 TAC §289.302. They define four specific licenses that one may apply for in Texas: Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Technician and Senior Laser Hair Removal technician.

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Apprentice  – Persons looking to practice laser hair removal in Texas must meet the following educational and training requirements before application for licensure:

At least 24 hours of training in:

  • LHR device safety;
  • laser physics;
  • skin typing;
  • skin reactions;
  • treatment protocols;
  • burns;
  • eye protection;
  • emergencies; and
  • posttreatment protocols;

 

An additional 16 hours of training in:

  • cardiopulmonary resuscitation (a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate may be used to satisfy up to 8 hours of the training required by this subparagraph);
  • review of client’s preexisting conditions to determine if consultation with a consulting physician is needed for possible diagnosis or treatment;
  • review of client’s previous hair removal procedures by another modality;
  • review of client’s current medications to determine if any medications need to be brought to the attention of the consulting physician based on established protocols;
  • proper signage and posting;
  • use of a LHR device; and
  • anesthesia used in conjunction with LHR procedures.

 

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Technician – To become a technician one must complete the following additional training.

  • Have performed at least 100 LHR procedures within 12 months under the direct supervision of a senior LHR technician or a LHR professional.

 

Senior Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Technician – Persons looking to become a Senior Laser Hair Removal Technician must also meet the following education and training requirements (in addition to those above):

  • performed 100 LHR procedures within 12 months;
  • supervised 100 LHR procedures within 12 months; and

 

Laser Hair Removal (LHR) Professional – Lastly, to become a Laser Hair Removal Professional requires completion of the above education and training, plus the following:

  • An applicant for a LHR Professional shall meet all the requirements of a Senior LHR Technician and be certified by a certification entity approved by the agency.

Texas Laser Technician Certification(s)

Becoming a Laser Hair Removal Technician and progressing to a senior LHR specialist requires not only the training above but also licensure with the state. Licensure will be granted following the completion of each defined training goals above. The Laser Hair Removal Professional certification is the only one requiring an examination.
