South Dakota Laser Technician School, Certification and Salary

The requirements for any person providing laser treatment are set by the South Dakota Joint Board of Nursing and Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. These rules can be found by visiting their website here.
Education Required
The South Dakota Joint Board of Nursing and Medical and Osteopathic Examiners ruled in 2011 that only physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants may be trained to use lasers in cosmetic and medical procedures.
SDCL 36-4-8.2 supports this ruling by statute.
The board also created the Laser Utilization by Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants protocol which addresses the education and training requirements for delegates.
In addition to completion of a bachelors degree, nurse practitioners and physician assistants must then attend a graduate program.
To perform laser treatments as a NP or PA, delegates must also meet these requirements:
- Have an approved collaborative or supervisory agreement on file with the Board of Medicine and Osteopathic Examiners and/or the Board of Nursing.
Documentation available upon request supporting:
- Completion of initial training conducted by a qualified practitioner/trainer skilled in the use of lasers.
- Demonstration of competency through the performance of the laser procedures under the direct observation of the practitioner/trainer for each laser type.
- 4. Demonstration of continued competence through continuing education and ongoing performance of the laser procedures.
South Dakota Laser Technician Certification(s)
In order to perform laser procedures in the state of South Dakota requires, at a minimum, a nurse practitioner or physician license. Both licenses require the above core education, as well as completion of the PANCE (PA) or the ANCC/AANP (NP). The PANCE includes 300 multiple choice questions taken over a 5 hour period. The ANCC and AANP includes 150 to 200 multiple choice questions taking between 3 and 4 hours to complete.
After a passing score, applicants may apply with the board for licensure. After licensed in the state, Nurses and Physician Assistants may apply for the laser utilization license by filing an approved supervisory agreement with their respective board as well as proof of the above completed training and hands-on experience.
