The South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners met in 2007 to clarify the legislation regarding the use and delegation of laser treatments in medical and cosmetic procedures.

In short, the ruling allows the delegation of laser procedures to “non-physicians” under the supervision of a licensed physician in the state. Supervision requires the physician to be on-site but not in the room during the procedure.

The rules also require the physician to ensure the “non-physician” has the proper training and education to perform the procedures however it is not specified what training requirements are needed. The delegate must keep a written record of their training and must follow all written office protocols created by the supervising physician.

While no specific education requirement is set, it is recommended that laser technicians complete a nationally accredited laser program to ensure safe and proper usage of the lasers.
