The requirements for any person providing laser treatment are set by the Division of Professional Licensure as well as the Department of Health and Human Services.

Education Required

The state of Massachusetts separates out the requirements for education based on the type of laser procedure being performed.

Laser Hair Removal is regulated by the Division of Professional Licensure and they stipulate it may be performed by a licensed electrologist so long as their education meets the following requirements.

40 hours of didactic courses. The didactic training shall include, at a minimum:

• Six credits in histology and hair structure, with emphasis on hair and skin structure;
• Eight credits in the fundamentals of bacteriology, sterilization and hygiene;
• Two credits in the principles of electricity, the modalities ofelectricityused inelectrolysis, and its effects and uses;
• Eight credits in basic dermatology;
• Ten credits in physiology, with an emphasis on endocrinology;
• Two credits in equipment for electrolysis, with an emphasis on approved electrolysis machines and the equipment necessary for operation of an electrolysis office;
• Four credits in professional conduct and office management.
• 600 hours of practical training

 

The required minimum of 600 contact hours of practical training shall extend over a period of not less than ten months and shall include training in epilation techniques; demonstrations of proper electrolysis treatment procedures for the legs, arms, face (including hairline and eyebrow shaping) and all other areas of the body not specifically prohibited by 238 CMR 2.03(3)(e) and 238 CMR 2.03(3)(f); and student “hands-on” participation in mastering the ability to apply and utilize such treatment procedures properly.

• Three (3) Credits of Practical Training and two (2) Credits of Didactic Training in Laser Electrolysis for programs governed by 238 CMR 3.06;
• Forty (40) Contact Hours of Practical Training and twenty (20) Contact Hours of Didactic Training in Laser Electrolysis for programs governed by 238 CMR 3.07.

 

To perform addition laser treatments outside of laser hair removal requires a nursing or physician degree as specified by Department of Health and Human Services. Those training requirements include:

The nurse must acquire education that including a supervised hands-on exam resulting in a passing grade. Components of the education include, as appropriate to the specific procedure, but are not limited to:

• Anatomy and physiology;
• Pathophysiology of the integumentary system and supporting structures;
• Cosmological and dermatologic conditions;
• Wound healing principles;
• Safe use of product/device/equipment ;
• Side effects and management;
• Management of emergencies; and
• Patient and environmental safety.

 

When the procedure includes the use of non-ablative, non-vaporizing laser or light-based devices, the nurse must have evidence of successful completion of a Laser Physics and Safety course that includes relative content from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and American National Standards for the Safe Use and Handling of Lasers in Health Care Facilities (ANSI) that includes both a didactic portion and a practicum.

Massachusetts Laser Technician Certification(s)

The state of Massachusetts will require licensure to become an electrologist. After completion the training requirements above, a person may apply with the state through their outside vendor, PearsonVue, by using this link.
