Education Required

Prior to April 2012, the use of lasers in cosmetic procedures was not a regulated treatment in the state of Hawaii. A hearing by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (read a summary here) ruled that the use of lasers by any licensee under it’s umbrella was prohibited as it was considered the practice of medicine (8/14/2014 ruling).

Considering the broad definition provided by the ruling in 2012, laser treatments in Hawaii and the surrounding islands may only be performed by a licensed medical doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner.

To become a physician assistant or nurse in the state of Hawaii will require a bachelors degree as well as successful completion of graduate level PA school, masters of science in nursing, doctor of nursing practice. All three programs typically last between 1 and 2 years following completion of a bachelors degree.

Hawaii Laser Technician Certification(s)

The state of Hawaii nor the Medical Board do not specify any specific certifications required to perform laser treatments, however it is required that you are certified as a physician assistant or nurse. Each of these certifications will require completion of a written exam monitored by the state. The physician assistant test (PANCE) is 300 multiple-choice questions and is taken over a 5 hour period. The nurse practitioner test is shorter, between 150 and 200 questions depending on the exam you take and is taken over 3 hours.
