Education Required

The state of Florida addresses the use of lasers for hair removal in rule 64B8-56.002 Equipment and Devices; Protocols for Laser and Light-Based Devices. In short, laser devices may be used by an electrologist under physician supervision so long as the laser is approved by FDA.

To become an electrologist and a laser technician in Florida requires specific training also addressed in this rule. This education requirement is spelled out in subsections 64B8-52.004(2) and (3) as follows:

• 30 Hour training course which may include 15 hours of home-study didactic training, in the use of laser and light-based hair removal or reduction devices.
• 5 Hours of hands-on experience with laser and light-based devices to include hair removal or reduction from all areas of the body.

Classes and topics required in the training are Biology of hair, Laser and light-based device terminology, Basic electricity, Laser and light-based hair removal physics, Safety and precautions, Laser and light based tissue interaction, Sanitation, ) Fitzpatrick skin typing, The patient intake form, The consultation, Proper documentation of patient case history and consent forms, Pre-treatment patient preparation including test spot considerations and the Nikolski sign, Treatment contra-indications including the recognition of disease conditions of the skin, Handpiece and spot size considerations, Fluence setting, Stretch technique, Use of grid stamp, Post-treatment procedures, Expected outcomes including erythema and edema, Possible adverse outcomes, and Follow-up care.

Training Courses must be approved by the Electrolysis Council and the actual training must be performed by a Certified Medical Electrologist with over one year of experience using lasers.

Once your training has been completed, electrologists will be required to work under the supervision of a physician.

Florida Laser Technician Certification(s)

Florida requires laser technician pass an examination by the Society for Clinical and Medical Hair Removal. The SCMHR offers 4 different tests dependent on the specialty of practice including: Certified Clinical Electrologist, Certified Medical Electrologist, Certified Laser Hair Removal Professional, and Certified Pulsed Light Hair Removal Professional.

The examination will test your knowledge of patient records, laser treatment theories and application, medical terminology and general anatomy, laser modalities, laser types and settings, safety principles, post treatment care, and the SCMHR ethics. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and must be proctored by a SCMHR proctor or agent.
